So, I've had to tell local friends to stop sending me anti-fascist memes related to what's going on in the U.S. right now because I've just... reached the end of my cope? I've had to get off twitter for a while, because my mental health just can't keep up. But at the same time it feels like the world is burning and I desperately want to do something, and well.

I've decided what I'm going to do is just try to help people in whatever way I can, which always feels like a good course of action to me.

So, I have this Russian friend on twitter. She's fannish, her name is Sasha, her twitter account is locked. We met in Black Sails fandom earlier this year. She's very delightful and funny and lives in St. Petersburg.

This year she'd really like to get married. She and her girlfriend have been together for about 5 years. Needless to say, a marriage is not possible in Russia (or Ukraine, where her girlfriend is from). So, they've thought up a plan to travel to Denmark to get married later this year, and they've been raising money mostly through their Russian fandom friends, to make the trip possible. Russian fandom doesn't really do paypal (other money transfer methods are easier), so when I asked how I could help they basically opened an account with PP just for me.

There's no public post about this fundraiser, no kickstarter page. I honestly don't even want to link their account names on twitter to this public post, although I of course asked them what details I could share before writing about this on DW.

Anyway, if you're looking for the usual safeguards to make sure this isn't a scam - they're not really available in this case. I can only tell you that I know this person and trust them and I've helped their marriage fund and have no regrets.

So, if you'd like to throw some money their way, or signal boost this to your friends, their paypal address is: blindpilot at yandex dot ru

(Also, Sasha has pointed out that if you'd like more details about what the money is for, you're welcome to email her at that address.)

I need help calculating upload speed times.

Our home connection uploads at 5 Mbs (bits).  In the fall a friend will have access to a 1 Gbs (bits) upload speed.

If I have around 1 TB(ytes) worth of data to upload, the math looks like this

1. Upload from MD's home = approximately 20 days (rounded up)
2. Upload from friend's location = 2-2 hrs

Now here's where it gets tricky. Some online backup servers cap the data flowing into their servers. Ex Sync.com caps it at
5 MB(ytes) or 40 M(bits)

In which case my math looks like this

1. Upload from MD's home = approximately 20 days (rounded up)
2. Upload from friend's location = 55-60 hrs (2+ days)

Did I get this correct?

I used this calculator

So, London was wonderful (WONDERFUL) but obviously pretty busy. On the days I wasn't at Nine Worlds, I walked about 11 kilometers a day, on average, according to my phone (there was a day when I walked 17,500 steps). Consider I have herniated disks in my back and am still recovering - it was A Lot.

Letter sent today to Campbell’s Soup asking them to resign from the President’s Advisory Board. Please call/email/fax/tweet the CEOs of those companies who remain. Contact info here: http://www.elliott.org/company-contacts/

“Please resign from the White House Advisory Board

We love your soup. Who doesn’t? What is more American than Campbell’s soup?

What is less American than the embrace of white supremacy and racism? Or people who fail to denounce it or speak out against it? I hate political litmus tests - they are too often cheap and meaningless symbolic gestures. Except we apparently need these gestures when the White House employs white supremacists and has refused to speak out against horrific acts of domestic terrorism over and over. It was silent when two men were murdered in Portland while defending two children from a bigoted attack. It refused to to condemn the racially motivated murder of two men in Kansas. It failed to speak out against the bombing of a house of worship in Minnesota. And this weekend it argued that Americans need to “unite” with those who march under symbols of hate and who kill their fellow Americans.

I love your soup. But I love America more and will stand against anyone who silently continues to support this administration and their hateful and racist policies.

Silence Is Consent to the Forces of Fear, Anger, and Division

Out of the billion posts I want to make about London, let's start with a somewhat random topic. Accents. And the weirdness of my brain.

Who here in the US has fiber with upload speeds of 500 Mbs-1 Gbs   Here in Silicon Valley ATT GigaFiber is limited to the northern valley. Google Fiber has dropped its plans for a Silicon Valley rollout (for now). Sonic.net has no plans to come south.

If you have access to 1GB, drop me a line @ mdawn6 @ yahoo.com

I guess I'm reading SciFi now.

Which I usually don't.

But I gave Ninefox Gambit a try, and I loved it SO much. It took me a while to get into it, because I had no idea how to imagine the concepts the author throws at you right away, and that really put me off. I still decided to continue reading, which was extremely rewarding.
It's about an officer who get anchored to the mind of an undead general, who was brilliant beyond comparison, but unfortunately also a traitor and mass murderer, to win an important battle for an oppressive regime.
The focus is for the most part on the characters dealing with each other and trying to solve problems, not a lot of action, which I liked. There is actually someone with dyscalculia, which I found nice for a change (like math in this world, it was important, but not described in detail though).
I really liked the world building, it was beautifully done, the characters were quite diverse in terms of race, gender identity, and orientation (I'm trying to remember if I've ever read a book by a male author in which there were openly LGBTQ+ characters, and I can't think of any). The technology was fun, cool, bizarre, and occasionally horrifying. Loved it.
Devoured the second book too, and it was just as great.
(Warning though: It's not free of sexual violence. For once, not with women as victims.)

Then, I figured I'd stay a while in the scifi realm, and read Octavia Butler's Dawn.
That didn't go so well.
I'll post detailed spoilers for the entire plot under the cut - however, if you haven't read it yet, you should at least know a major theme is non-consent, in various ways. I'll discuss that under the cut.

I was really prepared to love the shit out of this book, from what I'd heard about Octavia Butler.
And I mean, I get it, I think. The violation of consent, the colonialism allegories. I've never read or heard any discussion of this particular book, but that's what I figured. And as such, I guess it worked? But for the first time ever, I really wish I hadn't read it.

Spoilers )

So yeah, I get that I'm probably supposed to feel everything I feel, and that all the revulsion is evoked by the book not by accident, but on purpose, and I'm not saying it's a bad book or badly written, but I just really wish I had known that it was from the first page to the last about non-consensual acts, including, but not limited to rape.

I'm starting Ancillay Justice now, although I'm debating whether to read something by Terry Pratchett first.
