and there is a noise coming out of the wiring boards that makes it sound like a bunch of cicadas are trapped under there.

I have been following the wank around the revival of the '100 ways to end up in a Canadian Shack' meme with secret fascination and horror, but this utter gem, found on failfandomanon, is to me the high point this whole debate:

"It's not that 'shack' is a bad word. It's that the revival of the meme is threatening to erase a very high-profile social problem that no one outside Canada seems to be aware of."

What does SJW mean? I started to ignore the ismists so long ago, I'm clearly not au courant with the latest guilt lingo.

Ah. Huh. I'd like SJB: Social Justice Brigade. :)

Warriors sounds too nice somehow. Though maybe they don't mean warriors at all, there are other words that start with W.

Apologies for being evil in your LJ. All retribution should be visited upon me, not you.

Yeah, Social Justice Warriors. And yes, definitely pejorative -- it's meant to indicate, well, the sort of people who are less committed to social justice than committed to finding occasions upon which to declare others Insensitive On The Internet, while congratulating one another on their own superior enlightenment.

This particular fight just baffles me. As best I can tell, there is no one true Canadian Opinion about all of this, and how a fandom in-joke like this can threaten to "erase" a big scandal in Canada is a mystery (especially when upon examination, it turns out that the fandom joke doesn't come near touching the material of the scandal). If this one really did turn out to be some sort of online experiment to see how a community would react, I'm not sure I'd even be surprised.

I tried to read it, got lost somewhere in the middle of the irritated people, and wondered how getting two people together to have sex in a Canadian Shack could possibly generate so much controversy. Yeah, if the people involved were, say, living on a planet that didn't happen to include Canada...
